This locomotive was built by Avonside Engine Company in 1909 at Bristol and supplied to the East Greta Coal Company where it ran as No 14.
The East Greta Coal Company continued to expand to serve the various collieries along the route to the New South Wales Government Railways exchange sidings at East Maitland (previously known as East Greta).
The Avonside Engine Company built three locomotives to the design of this locomotive for the East Greta Coal Company.
The locomotives were employed on the South Maitland Railway (SMR) which was formed in 1918 when the mining companies of Hebburn Ltd and the East Coal Mining Company merged to form the South Maitland Railway Pty Ltd. By this time the railway network had grown to served 26 mines at various times. By the 1920s nearly half of all the coal produced in New South Wales was transported over the SMR.
The locomotive remained in service with the Peko-Wallsend, Hexham until as late as 1972.
Following withdrawal from service the locomotive was donated to the Hunter Valley Steam Railway & Museum (HVSR&M). It was stored at Rhondda Colliery for some years and was reportedly employed on shunting duties there on occasions.
In late 1983 it was moved to Glenreagh and stored for a further few years prior to being towed to Dorrigo around 1986.
It remains in storage at Dorrigo.
