This locomotive was built by Beyer, Peacock & Company at Gorton, Manchester in 1904 for the Cape Government Railways (CGR) as number 905.

In 1912 it was renumbered as 723 by the South African Railways (SAR) and classed as a class 5B locomotive.
After being withdrawn from service it was placed on a plinth at Strand station but was subsequently moved to De Aar before 1980.
Along with other locomotives at De Aar it was relocated to Millsite near Krugersdorp.
The locomotive is owned by the Transport Heritage Foundation (THF) and is part of the National Collection.
