In December 2023 Barnsley Museums and Historical England announced a £25 million plan to revive the Elsecar Heritage Railway (EHR) and to create a replica of the locomotive built in 1849 which ran on Earl Fittzwilliam’s private railway that had its station at Elsecar Iron Works which is now part of Elsecar Heritage Centre.
The \EHR operated on a branch of the Doncaster to Barnsley line which was originally built by Isaac bydodds in Rotherham to serve collieries and ironworks owned by Earl Fitzwilliam. The Earl had a private station in Elsecar.
The Elsecar Railway Preservation Group surrendered their lease in November 2020 and the railway closed.
The replica of the locomotive Fitzwilliam is planned to be a 0-4-2.It will be designed to burn e-coal and will be built by apprentices from South Yorkshirewith the support of engineering firms in the area.
