This locomotive was built by Hudswell Clarke & Co in Leeds in 1924 and was one of two engines supplied to the same design to work at Mulgrave Mill at Gordonvale. The locomotive acquired the name Pyramid which relates to Walshs Pyramid which is a triangular shaped mountain of over 900 metres which is situated close to the mill.
Mulgrave Central Mill is situated alongside the Mulgrave River in tropical north Queensland south of Cairns. Surrounding the mill are many hectares of sugar cane being farmed on the river’s fertile flood plain.
The locomotive was employed at Mulgrave Mill for thirty years until diesel power was introduced in 1955. After being in storage for a number of years the locomotive was placed on a plinth at the Rotary Park at Mareeba in 1959.
The locomotive was donated to the Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society (ANGRMS) in 1976 by which time it had suffered from being in the wet tropical environment. The locomotive was transported to Brisbane in 1976 and initially placed in storage at Rocklea before moving to the ANGRMS base at Woodford in 1979.
The locomotive has yet to be restored.
