This locomotive was built in 1954 for the National Coal Board (NCB) by the Hunslet Engine Company to the design used to supply to the Ministry of Defence and is thus regarded as an Austerity type locomotive.
See LNER class J94 for details.
The locomotive ended its working life with the NCB at Bickerstaff Colliery at Leigh. It moved to Bickerstaff in August 1977 and diesel traction took over the duties in 1979 but steam was still occasionally used until 1983.By the time it was at Bickerstaff it had been fitted with a Giesl ejector at Walkden.
During its working life with the NCB the locomotive was given the name Warrior but this is said to have been changed to Fred at Bickerstaff..
The locomotive was purchased for use on the Dean Forest Railway but is still being restored.
