This locomotive was built by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds in 1902 for the Mount Morgan Co Ltd along with Hunslet 797.
The gold mine at Mount Morgan dates back to 1882 and it became one of the richest gold mines in Australia and even for a brief time in the world. During its 99 years of mining the area yielded a total of 225 tons of gold, 50 tons of silver and 360,000 tons of copper.
796 was withdrawn from traffic in 1947 and converted to an overhead electric locomotive about four years later.
It is now displayed at Mount Morgan Mine Museum.
