This locomotive was built by Manning Wardle & Company at Hunslet near Leeds in 1911
This locomotive was built by Manning Wardle & Company to their H-type standard design of industrial & construction locomotive.
It was imported into Australia along with Manning Wardle 1780 to be used on railway construction work on the North Coast.
It later worked at the Potts Hill reservoir construction in Sydney and in 1923 it was moved to the Metropolitan Water Sewerage & Drainage Board at the Ryde Pumping Station in Sydney. At Ryde it hauled 40-60 tonne coal wagons from the main railway line via an exchange siding to coal bunkers over the boilers.
By 1960 the locomotive had been replaced by diesel power.
During 1985 the locomotive was restored to operation under contract at the New South Wales Railway Transport Museum (NSWRTM Thirlmere. After this it was stored at the Powerhouse Museum’s workshop and storage facility at Castle Hill in the Sydney suburbs.
A similar Manning Wardle & Company locomotive (Works No 1896) is also preserved in Australia
