Neilson, Reid and Company Works No 6286 – CGR 368 & SAR 1200

This locomotive was built by Neilson, Reid and Company in Glasgow in 1902 which is the year before the company amalgamated with Dübs and Company and Sharp Stewart and Company to form the North British Locomotive Company.

The locomotive started life as Cape Government Railway (CGR) number 368 and operated on the Midland System of the CGR.

It later became SAR number 1200 in 1912 following the establishment of the South African Railways (SAR).

It was one of the nine locomotives fitted with a superheated boiler and 19 inches bore cylinders and outside admission piston valves but retaining its class 8D classification.

The locomotive is located at Transnet Engineering Salt River in Cape Town.
