The locomotive started life as Cape Government Railway (CGR) number 788 and operated on the Eastern System of the CGR.
It later became SAR number 1223 in 1912 following the establishment of the South African Railways (SAR).
It was one of the nine locomotives fitted with a superheated boiler and 19 inches bore cylinders and outside admission piston valves but retaining its class 8D classification.
The locomotive was on display on a plinth at the entrance to the shed at Pretoria and is said to be now in the care of Friends of the Rail based in Pretoria.
