This locomotive was built at the Hyde Park Works of the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in 1904 for the Natal Government Railways.
It entered service as NGR 277 and became SAR class 1 number 1247 in 1912 following the establishment of the South African Railways.

After being withdrawn from service the locomotive was sold for industrial use and was employed at the Randfontein Estates Gold Mine where it carried the number 4. It was still in service there in 1984.
The locomotive is now owned by the Transport Heritage Foundation (THF) and is part of the National Collection and is believed to be at the Millsite Locomotive Depot, Krugersdorp.
