This locomotive was built the North British Locomotive Company (NBL) in Glasgow and delivered to the South African Railways in 1949. It was fitted with a type MX Torpedo tenders.
At some time the locomotive was sold BCL Limited who operated as a mining and smelting company. Their main centre of operations was the Selebi-Phikwe copper mine in Botswana.
The complex which included a deep copper mine and smelter opened in 1973. The ore was transported from the mine to the smelter by steam locomotives purchased from the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) and South African Railways (SAR). By January this locomotive (works no 26070) and classmate 26061 were the last two built by the North British Locomotive Company working anywhere in the world.
The locomotive is now displayed on a plinth on the Main Street in Selebi-Phikwe in Botswana.
