This locomotive was one of two built Beyer Peacock at Gorton in Manchester in 1907 for the Tasmanian Government Railways. They were intended to be used for hauling heavy freight trains. The locomotives weighed 72 tons and had a tractive effort of 19,947lbf

The cost of the locomotive was £5,370.

The two locomotives were fitted with superheaters around 1915.

E1 was last in service in 1962 after which it was stored and then presented to the Deloraine Municipality during the Railway Centenary in February 1971. It was then plinthed by Deloraine Apex Club in July 1971. 

The locomotive remains on the plinth at Deloraine.
