Peckett  & Sons  Works No 1069      No 4        0-4-0ST   Mount Morgan Co Ltd, Australia     Gauge 3ft 6in

This locomotive was built by Peckett & Sons at Bristol in 1905 for the Mount Morgan Co Ltd.

The gold mine at Mount Morgan dates back to 1882 and it became one of the richest gold mines in Australia and even for a brief time in the world. During its 99 years of mining the area yielded a total of 225 tons of gold, 50 tons of silver and 360,000 tons of copper.

The locomotive was subsequently employed at the Mount Isa Mines Co Ltd where it carried No.1.

The Mount Isa Mines Co Ltd is one of the worlds largest mining complexes with its hub at Glencore’s copper and zinc operations in Queensland.

After the locomotive was taken out of service at some time before 1955 it was initially preserved at St Joseph’s Convent School in Mount Isa.

Around 1982 it was sold to a private collector and transported to Spotswood, Melbourne.  In 1989 it was relocated to suburban Bayswater, Melbourne.

In August 2009 this locomotive, and Peckett 1174 which had also been employed at Mount Morgan, were sold and moved to a private location in South-East Queensland. Both locomotives were subsequently acquired by the Atherton – Herberton Historic Railway Inc and 1069 arrived there in April 2015 and 1174 in the following month.

The aim of the Atherton – Herberton Historic Railway Inc is to restore both locomotives to working order.
