The first five of a class of 42 locomotives were built by Neilson & Co and entered service on the Western Australian Government Railway in September 1896. They were used to haul suburban trains around Perth between Freemantle and Midland Junction and on the Kalgoolie to Boulder loop.
A further 12 were built by Robert Stephenson & Co at Darlington in 1898/99 and Nasmyth Wilson & Co at Patricroft near Manchester another 15 in 1901.
1n 1907/08 the Midland Railway Workshop converted 10 O class 2-8-0 locomotives to N class engines.
When suburban services ceased at Kalgoorie all of the locomotives were transferred to Perth where most remained in service until replaced by newer steam locomotives in the 1940s or diesel multiple units in the 1950s.
The last two locomotives (this one and number 200) of the class withdrawn from service in September 1960 had both been built by Robert Stephenson & Co at Darlington in 1898.
This locomotive (N201) spent most of its working life around Perth on passenger and goods duties. After being withdrawn from service in 1960 it was stored in the Midland Workshops before being returned to service as a steam cleaner at east Perth Locomotive Depot in April 1961. It was employed on this duty until around August 1965 after which it was offered to the town of Claremont for display.
In July 1972 the locomotive was moved to the Rail Transport Museum at Bassendean, Perth where it is the only 4-4-4T locomotive preserved in Australia.
