This is one of two locomotives built by Hudswell Clarke in Leeds in 1929 for the Rhodesia Railways. This followed Rhodesia Railways taking over the running of the line to Beira from the Mashonaland Railway Company and operating as the Mashonaland and Rhodesia Railways.

The locomotives cost £3,395 each.

The two locomotives were purchased to undertake shunting duties at Beira in Mozambique but they were found to have wheelbases that were too long to negotiate the curves there. As a result, they were placed in store for twelve years.

The locomotives were then utilised at Mafikeng and Mutare on shunting duties.

This locomotive (works no 1627) is now in the Railway Museum at Bulawayo.
