This locomotive was built in 1896 in Glasgow by Sharp, Stewart & Co for the State Coal Mines Department in Kaitangata. It worked on the Kaitangata Coal & Rly Co line until 1971.
In 1971 it was acquired by the West Coast Historical & Mechanical Society and operated at Shantytown.
It was overhauled in the 1980s after which it returned to traffic again and ran until overhauled again around 1991.
It the operated again until 2004 when it was taken out of service.
The locomotive was given another overhaul and returned to traffic in the following year.
In 2014 it was taken out of service again for another overhaul but was back in operation a year later.
