2001 Cock O’The North

P2 streamline P2 class after modifications in 1936-1937

In 1998 a project was formulated to build a new locomotive to the design of 2001 Cock O’ The North.

The group behind this new build is the Doncaster P2 Locomotive Trust.

The locomotive is being built as the original was remodelled in 1938 when it was fitted with Gresley motion, Walschaerts valve gear and streamlined in the A4 style.

Although initial progress on the new build progressed well – the frames were made in 2014 just before those for 2007 Prince of Wales – it has been very slow since then.

The project to build the new locomotive was broken down into a number of stages.

  • Stage 1 – Completion of the rolling chassis which was estimated to cost £900,000.
  • Stage 2 – Addition of the motion, brake rigging and platework.
  • Stage 3 – Assembly of the boiler and smokebox.
  • Stage 4 – The tender
  • Stage 5 – Electrical control gear

No timescales are published for these stages.

In October 2018 launched a scheme aimed at fund raising in order to progress the work on the locomotive.
