These saddle tanks must rate as one of the most successful and simplest rebuilding ever.
When Aspinall became CME at Horwich he produced his own class of 0-6-0, the 3F 52088 class. These engines replaced earlier Barton Wright 0-6-0s (thev2F 52016 class). At the same time the L&YR had an acute shortage of shunting engines so Aspinall set about rebuilding his predecessor’s 0-6-0 (2F 52016 class) as saddle tanks.

The Barton Wright 0-6-0 engines were built by a number of locomotive builders as the L&YR did only had limited facilities at Miles Platting in Manchester. The rebuild to saddle tank engines was undertaken at Horwich which had opened in 1886.
The rebuilt engines proved to be successful and a total of 230 were rebuilt between 1891 and a900, leaving only fifty engines in their original form. The only visible sign of the fact that these locomotives had been rebuilt was the curved rear steps, which originally matched the steps on the tender.
The engines in departmental stock (11304-11394) were all based at Horwich Works. They retained their original LMS numbers and they never renumbered. Four other engines (51429 at Horwich and 51412, 51444 and 51446 at Crewe) also later worked in the departmental stock as works shunters, but they retained their BR numbers.
Withdrawal of the class began in 1926 but ninety-six (plus the five departmental engines) came into BR stock in 1948.
11305 (built in 1877) was the last of the class to be withdrawn and it was for a short time in 1964 the oldest engine working on BR.

The engines taken into BR stock in January 1948 remained within the old L&YR territory apart from those employed at Crewe Works.
