In January 2018 the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust announced that they had acquired the first components of as part of plan to build a new V4 class locomotive.
The locomotive will not be built until the P2 class 2007 Prince of Wales has been completed.
By September 2018 the A1 Steam Locomtive Trust had formed a new subsidiary – V4 Steam Locomotive Company Limited – to oversee the construction of the new locomotive.
It has been estimated that it will cost £3m and take five years to build the locomotive.
In October 2019 the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust placed an order with the Darlington Locomotive Works for the V4 class locomotive. By this time the trust had started to scan 366 original V4 drawings into its Computer Aided Design (CAD) system.
The formal launch of the project is planned for the spring of 2020.
