9681 was withdrawn in August 1965 and sent to Barry scrapyard. It was taken to the Dean Forest Railway in 1975 and returned to steam in 1984. It was taken out of service in 2013 was originally scheduled to return to service in 2016 after an overhaul. Following the lifting of the boiler it was thought that 9681 would return to steam in 2018 or 2019.
By October of 2017 Bryn Engineering of Wigan were re-boring the cylinders. A new chimney had been cast and the original chimney put up for sale.
The extensive overhaul being undertaken at Norchard on the Dean Forest Railway was expected to enable the locomotive to be back in service late in 2018. This proved to be optimistic.
In April 2020 it was reported that a new bunker had been constructed for the locomotive and the plan was then to make a new cab to go with it. By this time the bottom end of the locomotive was nearly complete and the hope was to have it in service early in 2021.
In May 2022 it was reported that a successful steam trial following hydraulic tests had been undertaken at the Dean Forest Railway.
By November 2022 the locomotive had been reassembled and outshopped in black BR livery ready for testing. It is planned that the locomotive is be fully back in service in 2023.
