It was taken out of service in 2013 was originally scheduled to return to service in 2016 after an overhaul. Following the lifting of the boiler it was thought that 9681 would return to steam in 2018 or 2019.
By October of 2017 Bryn Engineering of Wigan were re-boring the cylinders. A new chimney had been cast and the original chimney put up for sale.
The extensive overhaul being undertaken at Norchard on the Dean Forest Railway is expected to enable the locomotive to be back in service late in 2018.
