This locomotive was built by Andrew Barclay in Kilmarnock and entered service in 1908 at Brownlee & Co. It was the fourth locomotive supplied by Andrew Barclay for use on the timber tramways in the Pelorus & Rai valleys west of Havelock.
The locomotive was delivered as a duplex locomotive which was effectively two 0-4-0T engines joined back to back at the rear. The details in the table above are for the locomotive in this form.
After nine years as a duplex the locomotive was split into two locomotives in 1916 – both carried the same builders works number. One half was immediately sold to the Tauranga Timber Co in the North Island. In 1927 it was purchased by the New Zealand Farmer Fertiliser Company of Te Papa of Auckland. In 1949 it was converted to a diesel locomotive which was last used in 1980 and has since been scrapped.
In 1917 the other half of the original locomotive was transferred to a Brownlee associated company, Lake Brunner Sawmilling, based at Ruru west of Greymouth. It was then altered to an 0-4-2T locomotive. It last steamed in 1948 but remained at Ruru until 1980 when it was acquired by a private individual in Auckland who moved the locomotive minus its side tanks to Auckland.
Ownership of the locomotive passed through a number of hands at Rotorua, Tirau and Nuhaka.
In 2008 it was acquired by Rotorua Ngongotaha Rail Trust. In 2016 it was sold to a private owner in Tauranga who cosmetically restored it for display on his own property.
