This locomotive was build by Andrew Barclay in Kilmarnock in 1909 for the Ngauranga freezing works of the Wellington Meat Export Company.
Selling frozen meat to Britain started in 1882 with a shipment of mutton and lamb which sold in London for twice the price it would have done in New Zealand. This resulted in a rapid rise in the export of frozen meat so that by 1884 12,000 tons were exported to Britain. The setting up of freezing facilities in New Zealand arose as a direct result of this market for meat.
The plant at Ngauranga was established by the Wellington Meat Export Company in 1890 as the second site for the company with a 42 year lease in the suburbs of Wellington. The original plant was opened in 1881.
The site included a slaughter house and freezing facilities and was considered by the company to be required as they had been unable to meet the demand for the level of business opportunities available at their earlier premises. It was planned that the site at Ngauranga would be able to freeze 900 sheep a day and have capacity to store 24,000 sheep.
The locomotive was used to transfer wagons from the New Zealand Railway sidings to the works.
In 1938 the locomotive was fitted with a replacement boiler.
It was employed until 1962 when it was withdrawn from service with serious boiler problems and replaced by a four-wheel diesel shunter.
It was then acquired by Sir Len Southward who moved the locomotive to his factory in Seaview.
In 1981 the locomotive was gifted to Steam Incorporated and stored at the Paekakareki depot.
In 1996 a group of younger members of Steam Incorporated (who gained the name Barclay Boys) commenced work on restoring the locomotive to steam.
The locomotive was stripped down and worn parts refurbished but the project came to a halt in the early 2000s when the Barclay Boys moved on to bigger projects or away from the region.
In 2012 the locomotive was sold to a private owner based at the Silver Stream Railway (SSR) at Wellington. Some work has been undertaken since the locomotive was moved to the SSR. This includes a new cab and coal bunkers under construction, a new firebox has been delivered after manufacture
