This locomotive was built by W G Bagnall & Company at Stafford in 1909 for the Christchurch Gas Coal and Coke Company. The 8 ton locomotive was employed at the Christchurch Gas Works where it was used to shunt wagons of coal delivered to the works by the New Zealand Railway (NZR). From 1961 until 1969 when it was taken out of service the locomotive was used as a standby. In 1970 it was donated to the Canterbury Railway Society (CRS) who remain its owner.
As restoration of the locomotive was not high on the list of priorities of the CRS it was leased to the Pleasant Point Railway in Canterbury in 1979.
The locomotive was not restored at the Pleasant Point Railway and it returned 15 years later to the CRS site in the Ferrymead Heritage Park at Christchurch.
The locomotive is now in a poor condition and remains stored at Ferrymead.
However the Bagnall was not restored while at Pleasant Point and returned some 15 years later to Ferrymead, where it has since been stored in a dismantled condition.
