It operated on the Bengal-Nagpur Railway and later the India Railways until withdrawn from service in the 1970.

In 2006 the locomotive was returned to steam on a limited number of occasions. The restoration was undertaken at Kharagpur workshop by using parts from classmate BNR 815 which was preserved in the Delhi Railway Museum.

It first steamed again in November 2006 hauling a train between Shlimar and Mecheda in Bengal.

The parts were subsequently stripped off the locomotive and refitted to the donor engine.

In 2018 a second attempt to restore the locomotive to operation was attempted. On this occasion new parts were fabricated to replace the those missing as part of the US $400,000 refurbishment of the locomotive.

The restored locomotive made one trip during 2019.

It remains preserved at Kharagpur Workshops.
