Sixteen class 14 locomotives were built by Beyer, Peacock and Company at Gorton, Manchester for the Rhodesia Railways. Six (215-220) were built in 1928 and ten (231-240) in the following year.
They were purchased to work on the Beira line which ran from the port of Beira in Mozambique to Bulawayo which was operated by Rhodesia Railways.
In 1891, Portugal and the United Kingdom signed a contract for the construction of the Beira Railway, to link the Mozambican port of Beira with Salisbury ( now known as Harare). By 1900, this line was in service using 3ft 6 in gauge (Cape gauge) throughout.
In 1949 the line was sold to Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique along with eight locomotives (215-220 & 231-232).
The locomotives that remained on the Rhodesia Railways were later renumbered 500-507 in 1951.
