The class 16 locomotives were built by Beyer Peacock at Gorton, Manchester for the Rhodesian Railways.
The twenty locomotives were built in two batches. The first batch of eight (221-228) were built in 1929 and the second batch of twelve (259-270) in 1938.
When they were first introduced they were the largest locomotives on the Rhodesian Railways.
The locomotives were later renumbered as 600-619.
This locomotive (Works No 6562 RR221 and 600) was built by Beyer, Peacock and Company at Gorton, Manchester for the Rhodesia Railways in 1929.

It is preserved at the Bulawayo Railway Museum.
