93 class XE locomotives were built for Indian Railways between 1928 and 1930 and in 1945.

They were the largest of the earlier Indian Standard broad Gauge freight locomotives and weighed 196 tonnes.

  • 44 by William Beardmore & Co – Works no 417-460 – IR 22501-23 & 22536-56
  • 49 by Vulcan Foundry – IR 22524-35 & 22557-93

I have seen it reported that 51 class XE locomotives were built at Vulcan Foundry of which 35 were built in 1945 and constituted the first export contract to be handled after the Second World War.

The 35 delivered in 1945 had re-designed cylinders and steam chests which gave improved calve events, grease lubrication on side rods, big ends fitted with Skefko roller-bearingsand a Cole pattern hind truck.

A variant on the class was the AWE class locomotives which were supplied by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in USA in the period after the Second World War.
