In total 871 class YP locomotives were built to operate in India.
- Baldwin Locomotive Works in the USA built 20 in 1949
- North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow built 100 in 1952
- Krauss-Maffei built 200 between 1952 and 1954
- Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company in India built 551 between 1954 and 1970
They were introduced to haul light express trains but by the mid 1980s most express trains were powered by diesel locomotives. By this time the YP class locomotives were being used on some express workings but were mostly used on slower stopping trains.
Preservation
A number of YP locomotives have been preserved including one built by the North British Locomotive Company.
