This locomotive was built by Dübs and Company in Glasgow in 1901 for the Natal Government Railways (NGR) where it carried the number NGR 166.
It was taken into the South African Railways (SAR) stock in 1912 as SAR 249.
Along with the other members of the class it was converted from its initial 4-10-2T wheel arrangement to 4-8-2T of the H2 class.
The locomotive appears to have been employed at Tavistock Colliery as No 1at some stage after being taken out of service with the SAR. The colliery had exchange sidings with the SAR at Kromklip.
At some stage the locomotive spent time on display at Estcourt station on the main line from Durban to Johannesburg.
The locomotive is now at Witbank Locomotive Depot.
