Hudswell Clarke      Works No 1423          0-4-0WT      National Portland Cement, Australia    Gauge 2ft 0in

This locomotive was built by Robert Hudson Ltd at their Gildersome works in Leeds, under a licence arrangement with nearby Hudswell Clarke Ltd. Under this agreement signed in 1911 Robert Hudson Ltd manufactured narrow gauge locomotives to Hudswell Clarke designs. 188 locomotives were built under this arrangement and they carried works numbers in the Hudswell Clarke sequence  and thus this locomotive built in 1922 has a Hudswell Clarke Ltd works number 1423.

The locomotive was purchased by National Portland Cement to work on their tramway system linking limestone quarries with a cement plant on Maria Island, off the east coast of Tasmania. The tramway opened in 1923 and closed in July 1930 as a victim of the Depression.

The locomotive was then unused until around 1944 when it was purchased by Corrimal Coal & Coke in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. Here it traversed the escarpment, linking mine adits to a rope haulage incline to the foot of the mountain until it was taken out of service in October 1961.

In 1967 the locomotive is believed to have been purchased privately and relocated to the southern Sydney suburb of Kirrawee.

In 1972 it was moved to the Southern Highlands Museum at Colo Vale, where it steamed in 1976 after rebuilding and restoration.

In 1979 the locomotive was relocated to a new museum site at North Menangle which is now known as the Campbelltown Steam & Machinery Museum. It has operated here on a short demonstration line.
