This locomotive was built by Hudswell Clarke & Co in Leeds in 1939 and was initially employed by Colonial Sugar Refinery (CSR) at the Hambledom Mill near Cairns.
The Macknade Sugar Company opened a sugar plantation and the Macknade Sugar Mill in 1874 which is the oldest raw sugar mill in Australia.
Close to the mill there is a six kilometre long jetty at Lucinda which is the world’s largest sugar loading facility.
The locomotive was later transferred to the Victoria Mill at Ingham near Townsville. The locomotives at the Victoria Mil carried names of local towns and Australian cities which resulted in this locomotive being given the name Cairns.
After being taken out of service the locomotive was donated to the Illawarra Light Railway & Museum Society (ILRMS) in 1978. It was overhauled by the ILRMS and entered service at the museum in 1979.
The locomotive has been a regular performer at Albion Park which is the home of the ILRMS. It is currently out of service and awaiting an overhaul.
