Hudswell Clarke      Works No 297  South Bulli 2    0-6-0T      South Bulli Colliery, Australia    Gauge 4ft 8½in

This locomotive was built by Hudswell Clarke & Co in Leeds in 1888. Although there are different stories on the early years of the locomotive by 1891 it was in service at the South Bulli Colliery hauling coal to the company jetty at Bellambi. The line to the colliery had a flat crossing over the New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) Illawarra main line. Following closure of the jetty its route was truncated to exchange sidings with the NSWGR near Bellambi station.

The locomotive was withdrawn from service in April 1962 after a working life of seventy years and donated to the Australian Railway Historical Society (ARHS), NSW Division.

In March 1966 the locomotive was hauled on a well wagon to Sydney Central Station as part of a steam tour train. The locomotive was then cosmetically restored at Eveleigh Workshops before a period of storage at Petersham sidings.

In 1972 the locomotive became part of the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum (NSWRTM) collection in the Enfield Roundhouse.

When the NSWRTM was evicted from Enfield the locomotive was not moved to the new base at Thirlmere but was returned to the Illawarra region for display by the Illawarra Light Railway & Museum Society at Albion Park where it arrived in October 1974. Before being placed on static display it was cosmetically restored between August 1975 and December 1978.

In 1995 the locomotive was moved to the Bulli Black Diamond Museum & Heritage Centre, which is based in the historic Bulli Station building.

As the locomotive and the wagons with it are displayed in the open air near to the coast ongoing maintenance is required to protect the exhibits.
