Hunslet     Works No 1825    PWD 79    0-6-0ST      Public Works Department    Gauge 4ft 8½in

This locomotive was built by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds in 1938. It is the only Hunslet 0-6-0ST imported into Australia.

The locomotive was acquired by the Public Works Department (PWD) who employed it at Port Kembla following the construction of the Australia Iron & Steel (AIS) steelworks in the 1920s and the move of shipping from nearby Wollongong.. The PWD built a small railway network there to build the port and to serve the ships using it.

The loco was used for the reconstruction of Port Kembla then used for shunting there. The NSW PWD railway operations and locos were transferred to the NSWR in 1949, including No.79, which was withdrawn in 1963.

In 1949 the commercial operations around the wharves at Port Kembla were transferred to the New South Wales Government Railway (NSWGR). This included this locomotive.

The PWD retained its construction network and it continued to operate its locomotives well into the 1960s.

The locomotive is now on static display at the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere.
