This locomotive was built in 1953 for the National Coal Board (NCB) by the Hunslet Engine Company to the design used to supply to the Ministry of Defence and is thus regarded as an Austerity type locomotive.
This locomotive started its working life with the National Coal Board (NCB) and it spent many years operating at NCB South Hetton Colliery, County Durham.

In 1963 the locomotive it acquired a boiler from another engine and was fitted with a mechanical stoker.
During May 1964 the locomotive underwent trials on the Lambton railway in an effort to keep steam power there. It returned to Hetton later in 1964.
The mechanical stoker was disconnected in 1967.
Diesel power was introduced at the colliery around 1969 but not without a few problems with the diesels meant that some steam working continued here for a while longer.
After finishing its working life with the NCB it was acquired by the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway.
The locomotive was in in store on the Embsay & Bolton Railway awaiting restoration until it was moved to the North Tyneside Steam Railway in August 2020. This followed the locomotive being bought by a member a North Tyneside member.
An overhaul of the locomotive was anticipated to start later in 2020 but this was later forecast to begin in 2021.
