This locomotive was built by John Fowler in Leeds in 1927 for the Innisfail Tramway. It was one of three Fowler. In all there was a fleet of 13 locomotives employed on the line to transport cut cane to the mills for processing, and then transporting raw sugar to Mourilyan Harbour.
The three Fowler locomotives were grouped as the B9½. The B represented that the locomotives had two driving axles and the 9½ the diameter of the cylinders. They were the last locomotives purchased by the Queensland Railway yo operate on the tramway.
The 30 mile long line was built by the Geraldton Shire Council. The line linked the cane fields to the South Johnstone Mill, Mourilyan Mill and Mourilyan Harbour. In 1914 the railway was taken over and operated by the Queensland Railways who operated it until 1977 when it was sold to local sugar mills.
The three locomotives were withdrawn from service in the early 1960s. This one was withdrawn in 1963 and had been the last in service.
The locomotive was then placed on a plinth in Flitzerald Park in Innisfail. The locomotive deteriorated and became a candidate for scrapping but was saved because of its historical significance when the Johnstone Shire Council donated it to the Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society (ANGRMS) in 1976.
This locomotive is the only surviving locomotive that worked on the tramway and it has been preserved by the ANGRMS at Woodford where it was moved to in 1979.
