This is one of 25 locomotives built for the Queensland Railways between 1874 and 1882. Kitson & Company built 12, Avonside Engine Company 3, Dübs and Company 6, Neilson & Company 2 and the North Ipswich Railway Workshops 2.
This locomotive was built by Kitson & Company in Hunslet near Leeds in 1875 and entered service with the Southern & Western Railway in October 1876 as number 28 of the E class. Under the Queensland Railways the locomotives were grouped as the B12 class in 1890 but the number was unchanged. The B representing that the locomotives had three driving axles and the 12 the cylinder diameter.
In 1901 the locomotive was transferred to the 94 mile Normanton to Croydon Railway where it operated until condemned in 1928. The Normanton to Croydon line is an isolated line in Queensland which was built between 1888 and 1891. The impetus to build the line was enhanced with a major gold strike at Croydon in November 1885. The output of gold diminished in the early 1900s and the railway only made a profit until 1902 after which it was kept open as a community service.
The boiler from the locomotive was repaired and sold to a mine at Croydon in 1931. The rest of the locomotive remains derelict at Normanton station.
There are parts of three class B12 locomotives still in existence but it is probably unwise to say the locomotives have been preserved. The other two are.
