This locomotive was built by Manning, Wardle & Co in Leeds in 1916 and was employed at the Imlay works near Whanganui.
The Imlay works were built in 1915 by the New Zealand Refrigerating Company of Christchurch.
Whanganui was established in 1840 but was originally called Petre and was only officially called Wanganui in 1854. The city’s spelling has now been corrected to Whanganui, which in te reo Māori can be interpreted as big bay or big harbour.
The works at Imlay had the capacity to store 250,000 mutton carcasses.
The locomotive is now preserved at the Tokomaru Steam Museum.
