This locomotive was built by Neilson, Reid and Company in Glasgow in 1902 which is the year before the company amalgamated with Dübs and Company and Sharp Stewart and Company to form the North British Locomotive Company.
The locomotive started life as Cape Government Railway (CGR) number 537 and operated on the Midland System of the CGR.

It later became SAR number 645 in 1912 following the establishment of the South African Railways (SAR).
The locomotive is on display at the Outeniqua Transport Museum in George.
