North British Locomotive Company Works No 16401 – NGR 306 & SAR 1276

This locomotive was built at the Queens Park Works of the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in 1904 for the Natal Government Railways.

It entered service as NGR 306 and became SAR class 1 number 1276 in 1912 following the establishment of the South African Railways.

It is privately owned by the Railway Society of South Africa (RSSA)

The locomotive is now owned by the Railway Society of South Africa (RSSA). The RSSA was established in 1960, mainly for the benefit of a small group of steam train photographers living in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The base for the organisation is at Masons Mill Locomotive Depot west of Durban.

The organisation owns 10 locomotives but because of financial constraints many are in store awaiting preservation.

The locomotive is at Hilton station.
