This locomotive was built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in 1913 for the South African Railways (SAR).
It entered service as a class 4 locomotive but following being refitted with a Watson boiler it was reclassified as a class 4R engine.

The locomotive is owned by the Transport Heritage Foundation (THF) and is believed to be at the Queenstown Locomotive Depot.
