This locomotive was built the North British Locomotive Company (NBL) in Glasgow and delivered to the South African Railways in 1949. It was fitted with a type MX Torpedo tenders.

The locomotive is now privately owned by Ian Welch who is a member of Mainline Steam in New Zealand. It is housed in the Bloemfontein Locomotive Depot and it is understood that the aim is to move it to New Zealand at some time.
