This locomotive was built by the North British Locomotive Company and entered service with SAR as a class 25 locomotive in 1954. It was rebuilt as a class 25NC none condensing locomotive in the 1970s.
It was withdrawn from service in 1991 and purchased by Amcoal, Enyati Colliery Railway.
The Amcoal and Enyati collieries in near Vryheid in Natal on the Hlobane coalfields. The colliery railway connected with the national network at Boomlager.
In 1993 the locomotive was purchased by Ian Welch and transferred to Princetown before being shipped to Auckland in June 1996 where it arrived in early August 1996.
The locomotive is too large to operate in New Zealand and is awaiting cosmetic restoration. It is believed to be at the Mainline Steam Heritage Trust site at Mercer.
