This locomotive was built by the North British Locomotive Company and entered service with SAR as a class 25 locomotive in 1950s
It was one of only three locomotives that were not converted to none condensing class 25NC locomotives and only one of two that have survived into preservation. The other locomotive was built by Henschel & Son of Kassel in Germany. These two survivors are now being cared for by Steamnet 2000.
This locomotive was the last condensing locomotive in service in when it hauled its final train in June 1992 when it worked to De Aar and back to Kimberley. Since then the locomotive has been stored at Kimberley.
The organisation offered to purchase the locomotive, identified by the South African Heritage Resource Association (SAHRA) as a heritage asset, but the offer was rejected by the Transnet Foundation. Custody of the locomotive was awarded to Steamnet 2000 in October 2016.
This locomotive was identified by the South African Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA) as a category A resource that should be preserved.
It is currently located at the Beaconsfield Locomotive
