Peckett  & Sons  Works No 1711   Sir John Grice     0-4-0ST   Metropolitan Gas Company, Australia     Gauge 2ft 6in

This locomotive was built by Peckett & Sons at Bristol in 1926 for the Metropolitan Gas Company in West Melbourne where it carried the name Sir John Grice.

Sir John Grice was an Australian businessman, company director and University of Melbourne vice-chancellor.

The City of Melbourne Gas and Coke Company leased 5 acres of Crown Land in 1854 to construct a plant for the gasification of black coal. The works operated until 1962, importing coal via a dedicated wharf and a system of narrow gauge tracks drawn by steam locomotives.

This locomotive was withdrawn from service at the gasworks in 1941 and stored until 1962 when it was sold for private preservation.

In 1965 its ownership changed and it operated at the Whistle Stop fun park in Frankston.

In 1974 the locomotive was purchased by the Puffing Billy Railway Preservation Society and placed on static display at their museum at Menzies Creek.

Work on restoring the locomotive started in 1978 and in 1981 it steamed again.
