This locomotive was built by Sharp Stewart & Co in Glasgow in 1896 for the Cape Government Railways (CGR) where it entered service as number 372 on the Midland System

It later carried the CGR number 572.
In 1912 it was renumbered as South Africa Railways (SAR) number 482 following the creation of the Union of South Africa in the previous year.
In July 1956 the locomotive was still in service at Port Elizabeth and at times still worked the mainline on work trains or pickup work. When it was eventually retired, it was plinthed inside the main entrance to the electric locomotive shops at Koedoespoort in Pretoria.
