3278 was built by the American Locomotive Company in 1944

Shipped to Britain and used on GWR after running in on LNER.

Following being returned to USATC stock it was shipped to France in 1944.

After the end of the Second World War the locomotive was part of a batch of 248 engines that was given to the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (Italian State Railways). In Italy it was part of the 736 class and carried the number 736.073.

In 1959 it was part of a batch of 25 locomotives sold from Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) to the Greek Railways before being brought back to Britain where it was based on the Mid Hants Railway.

It was given the name Franklin D Roosevelt who was the President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945.

It steamed again in the later 1990’s for ten years during which time it visited a number of heritage railways.

In 2014 it moved to the former Mod site at the Long Maston Military Railway in Warwickshire but is currently being overhauled at Tyseley.

In January 2021 it was reported that the locomotive had been moved to the Churnet Valley Railway where work on overhauling the locomotive will continue.
