The Claud Hamilton Locomotive Group has been established with the aim of building a D16/2 class locomotive which will be carry the number 8783 and named Phoenix. The number 8783 was carried by an earlier locomotive which became BR 62614.
8783 was one two members of the Claud class locomotives which was allocated to hauling the Royal Train on LNER territory. It regularly transported members of the Royal Family to and from Wolfterton near Sandringham.
At the end of August 2016 the first part of the new locomotive was constructed – buffer beam.
The Claud Hamilton group is linked to the Whitwell and Reepham Railway which is intended to be the home base for the construction of the new locomotive.
Construction is planned to take 10 to 20 years.
In August 2019 the group behind the construction project announced that they had acquired an original Claude Hamilton whistle. It is believed the whistle was carried on 62590.
